Maandagmorgen 23 december krijgt Toon Helmes een email vanuit Australië van Robert Bucknall. Robert is een nabestaande van Flying Officer Geoffry Heard. Eén van de bemanningsleden die op 26 maart 1942 omkwam bij de crash met Stirling Bommenwerper aan de Tappenweg in Rafelder. Geoffry Heard was net voor de crash uit het hevig brandende toestel gesprongen maar te laat en valt te pletter bij Bouwman in het weiland. Op deze bijna drie minuten durende promo-film van de RAF is het toestel te zien dat in Etten is neergestort, de MG K N3709 en heel duidelijk is herkenbaar, Geoffry Heard aan het einde van de film. Dit beeld is heel bekend want in het archief zit een foto van Geoffry Heard en, zoals nu blijkt, is dat een “stil” moment uit deze film. Dat werd al vermoed maar deze film was nog altijd niet gevonden. Tot nu.  

Het is de bedoeling dat de nabestaanden van deze crash worden uitgenodigd voor de openluchtherdenking op 5,6 en 7 juni 2020.

Robert Bucknall schrijft het volgende bij de film.

I still think frequently about our trip to Gendringen for the wonderful commemoration ceremony for my uncle Geoff and the crew of K for Kitty (de bijnaam voor de Stirling Kist). I remember well your hospitality, and also the great work that you and your organisation put into the creation of the memorial. I found this newsreel from the World War 2. It clearly shows Uncle Geoff in it. We already have a photo that was taken from a single frame of this newsreel. The quality of the newsreel is not very good, but nevertheless it’s quite adequate. Uncle Geoff is visible in the group at 59 seconds into the footage (centre of the front row); more clearly at 2 minutes 31 seconds; and then in the centre stage at 2 minutes 34 seconds. The nose of K for Kitty is visible at upper left at 11 seconds into the opening footage. There are quite a few newsreels on the internet that feature Stirling bombers. Some of them include footage of 7 Squadron at Oakington. This is the only one that I’v seen Uncle Geoff and his crew in; although I have seen some footage elsewhere that shows K Kitty first in the line up of the bombers as shown in the attached.

Tot zover het schrijven van Robert Bucknall en het toont maar weer eens hoezeer de familie, ook na 78 jaar, nog betrokken is bij deze crash. Wij hopen enkele nabestaanden te mogen begroeten tijdens het herdenkingsweekend. Op dit moment hebben wij nog altijd geen antwoord van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht op ons verzoek om met historische toestellen naar Etten te komen. Wat zou het geweldig zijn voor de organisatie maar zeker voor de nabestaanden en het publiek als het zou lukken.
